5 Apps To Get Better At Math: For Kids & Adults

“How much is 13 times 9?”

Growing up in a family of math wizards, it was an everyday situation for me to be asked to solve all kinds of problems as a price to be allowed to watch TV or get chocolates. Truth be told, on most days, I struggled with it and thought of it as a punishment. Today, thanks to technology and the creators of these few apps, learning math has now become a fun exercise, not just for kids, but also for adults. And just like any other muscle, our brain gets better at math with more practice.

If you are struggling with simple addition or subtraction, then this app is for you. Suitable for both children and adults, this app will take you step by step to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with single- and double-digit numbers. With continuous practice, you will be able to do mental maths while going out to purchase groceries or keeping a strong hand on the finances. Moreover, if you are a mother and your child is struggling with these concepts, then asking them to play on this app for five minutes every day will drastically improve their calculation skills.

My Experience: For the first few days, it didn’t feel like I was getting better. But after continuous practice, I realised that there was a ripple effect where I could solve more complicated questions rather easily than physically calculating it on paper to move ahead.

Intermediate: Lumosity And Elevate

In the pre-lockdown era, whenever I would go shopping, I would find it difficult to backtrack a discounted item. Say if a kurta is for Rs 2,500 and it has a discount of 25 per cent, how much would that be? Similarly, if you have children who are having difficulty with understanding or calculating percentages and fractions then these two apps are apt for them. These apps have interactive games that not only make studying math fun but also helps one to track their progress.

My Experience: My favourite game in Elevate is Proportion. This game makes you better in understanding the relationship between fractions and percentages. The more you play the maths games in Lumosity or Elevate, the better you will become in understanding statistics of marketing or sales in your company. For children, these two apps will help them build a strong mathematical foundation for advanced problems.

Advanced: Magoosh And Economist

If you are someone who is preparing for entrance exams such as GMAT, GRE, or SAT, then these apps will help not only prep you for the exams with their videos and syllabus but also help you understand how to give the exams. Furthermore, some of them have an in-built system to gauge where you are making the most mistakes and offer you more problems in that area to solve and get better at. These apps help you with high school math as well.

My Experience: When I was preparing for my GMAT, I was on the lookout for apps that I could play with or those that will be stress-busting apart from helping me study. I came across these two apps which worked beautifully for me.
